When Lord Jesus Christ was asked which were the greatest commandments and laws, He answered: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength.” (Mark 12:30) “This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the laws and the prophets.” (Matthew 22:38-40) Jesus later added that the second commandment also meant to “Love thine enemies.” Therefore, love is the basic principle on which the world turns; without this law of God the world cannot continue to exist.
